What to See
in & Around Bhopal
Prehistoric cave art. Ashoka's great stupa. Asia's largest mosque. A national park in the city centre. Bhopal has more ground to cover than most visitors expect.
Upper Lake (Bada Talab)
Built by Raja Bhoj around 1,000 years ago, the Upper Lake covers 38 sq km and is one of the largest man-made lakes in Asia. The lakefront road along Van Vihar is one of the best urban drives in Central India. Boating, the Shaurya Smarak war memorial, and Kamla Park all sit along the shoreline. Worth a morning or evening on your own terms.
Within Bhopal cityTaj-ul-Masajid
Construction began in 1868 under Nawab Shah Jahan Begum and was not completed until 1971. The result is one of Asia's largest mosques: a pale-pink sandstone façade, two 18-storey minarets, and three white domes. Around 175,000 worshippers can gather here. The attached madrasa is still active. The annual Ijtema draws millions of pilgrims, one of the largest Islamic gatherings in the country.
Old Bhopal, within citySanchi Stupa (UNESCO)
The Great Stupa at Sanchi is India's oldest stone structure. Emperor Ashoka commissioned it in the 3rd century BCE. The four carved gateways, called toranas, depict Jataka tales in remarkable detail and are among the finest examples of early Indian stone carving. The hilltop complex has smaller stupas, monasteries, and temples built across fifteen centuries, from 300 BCE to 1200 CE.
~46 km from BhopalBhimbetka Rock Shelters (UNESCO)
Bhimbetka is about 45 km from Bhopal in the Vindhya Range. The paintings here are over 100,000 years old, placing them among the oldest examples of human art anywhere on earth. More than 700 rock shelters carry ochre, white, and green paintings of hunts, dances, rituals, and animals. The visual record runs from the Palaeolithic all the way through to the mediaeval period. Quietly extraordinary.
~45 km from BhopalVan Vihar National Park
Van Vihar runs along the northern shore of the Upper Lake. It is a Project Tiger reserve inside a state capital, which is rare anywhere in the world. The park has Bengal tigers, white tigers, leopards, bison, and sloth bears in naturalistic enclosures, with the lake visible through the trees. Go early morning or just before sunset for the best views. Entry is straightforward and not expensive.
Within Bhopal cityShaukat Mahal & Chowk Bazaar
Shaukat Mahal is a 19th-century building commissioned by Sikander Begum that mixes Gothic, Islamic, and French Renaissance styles in a way that is hard to classify. It sits next to Sadar Manzil, the Nawabs' official hall of audience. The surrounding Chowk bazaar is the old city at its most alive: itr (perfume) stalls, silver filigree jewellery, and street food. Half a day here is well spent.

Bhopal is Madhya Pradesh's capital, known as the City of Lakes for its Upper and Lower Lakes. The city is close to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Sanchi Stupa, about 46 km away and India's oldest stone structure, and Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, about 45 km away and home to prehistoric cave paintings over 100,000 years old. In the city, the Taj-ul-Masajid is one of Asia's largest mosques and Van Vihar National Park has tigers and leopards. The food culture is strong: seekh kebabs, biryani, shami kabab, and korma. The Bhopal Mahotsav in January is a well-regarded cultural festival.
October to March is the best time. Temperatures range from 10 to 28°C, good for visiting Sanchi, Bhimbetka, Van Vihar, and the lakes. November through February is the most comfortable stretch. The Bhopal Mahotsav runs in January and the Ijtema at Taj-ul-Masajid usually draws millions of pilgrims, worth knowing about if you are visiting around that time. April to June is very hot, often reaching 45°C. The monsoon (July to September) fills the lakes and turns the landscape green, but heavy rain can disrupt outdoor plans.
From Delhi, fly (~1.5 hrs, daily to Raja Bhoj Airport BHO), take the Shatabdi Express (~5 hrs) or Rajdhani (~7 hrs), or drive about 700 km on NH-46 (roughly 11 hrs). From Mumbai, fly (~1.5 hrs), take the Rajdhani or Punjab Mail (~12 hrs), or drive about 770 km via Nagpur on NH-44. From Indore it is about 185 km by road (~3.5 hrs) or 4 hrs by train on the Intercity Express. Bhopal Junction is on both the Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Chennai main lines, so most long-distance trains stop here.
