A 240-acre botanical garden, a Tudor-style palace, Nandi Hills at sunrise, the Koramangala restaurant strip, and a craft beer scene that has no real equal in India. Bengaluru has more going on than most people expect.

Lalbagh Botanical Garden

Lalbagh was founded in 1760 by Hyder Ali and expanded by Tipu Sultan. It covers 240 acres and has over 1,000 plant species, a glass conservatory built in the style of London's Crystal Palace, Mughal fountains, a rose garden, and a 3,000-million-year-old volcanic rock formation that you can actually walk on. The biannual flower shows in January and August draw enormous crowds.

Bangalore Palace

Built in 1887 for the Wadiyar Maharajas and loosely modelled on Windsor Castle, Bangalore Palace is one of those places that genuinely surprises people. Wooden interiors, Gothic windows, stained glass, carved furniture, fortified towers. The 454-acre grounds host some of the city's biggest concerts and cultural festivals through the year.

Cubbon Park & Vidhana Soudha

Cubbon Park is 300 acres of old trees, walking paths, and rose gardens in the middle of the city. The red-brick Attara Kacheri (High Court) building sits at one end. The Vidhana Soudha, Karnataka's state legislature, is right next door. It is a massive granite neo-Dravidian structure that gets fully lit on Sunday evenings and national holidays. Worth seeing if you are in the area.

One of the world's largest ISKCON temples, spread across 7 acres in Rajajinagar. Cream-stone towers, carved gopurams, and three main shrines. The evening aarti draws thousands of people and is worth attending even if you are not religious. There is also a multimedia Vedic culture exhibit and a research library on-site.

Koramangala: Startups, Cafes, and a Lot of Energy

Koramangala is where BNGV The Grandeur sits, and it is a good neighbourhood to be based in. Flipkart, BigBasket, and Ola all started here. The 4th and 5th Block restaurant strips have the best density of good food in South India, from proper Darshinis to rooftop bars to specialty coffee. It is the kind of area you can walk around for an evening and not run out of things to try.

Nandi Hills

About 60 km from Bengaluru, Nandi Hills sits at 1,478 metres and gets properly misty early in the morning. The sunrise, when the hilltop breaks out above a cloud layer in the valley, is the main reason people make the trip. It draws big weekend crowds, so leave before 5am if you want peace. Tipu Sultan's summer palace is up there, along with 9th-century Dravidian temples and older temples at the foothills.
