About the destination

Gokul, where the story actually begins

Mathura is where Krishna was born. Gokul is where he was brought, the same night, across a flooded Yamuna — and where he grew up.

The village

Nanda Baba's Gokul

Gokul sits on the eastern bank of the Yamuna in Mahavan, about ten kilometres from Mathura city. This is Nanda and Yashoda's village — the butter, the cows, the cart, the childhood every Braj bhajan is about. Chaurasi Khamba, the eighty-four-pillared hall known as Nand Bhavan, still stands here. So does Brahmand Ghat, where Yashoda is said to have looked into a child's mouth and seen the whole universe.

The circuit

The Braj parikrama, from the right end

Most visitors base themselves in Mathura or Vrindavan and drive out to Gokul for an hour. Staying here reverses that. Gokul, Mahavan and Raman Reti are on your doorstep; Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish and Vishram Ghat are a twenty-minute drive; Dauji at Baldeo is beyond that. You start the yatra where the story starts, instead of commuting to it every morning.

Hotel Grand Lucent

Gokul Road, Mahaban Bangar, Mathura 281303 · Uttar Pradesh

Rooms have a king bed, air-conditioning, a ceiling fan and a fully tiled bathroom with a geyser — so there is hot water at five in the morning when you are leaving for darshan, not just when the hotel decides. Our kitchen is pure-vegetarian and serves to the room. Parking is free, on site, behind our own gate: a car or a Tempo Traveller goes straight in, which is not something Mathura city will offer you at any price.

The lobby, the lift and the corridors are all in the photographs on this page. Nothing here was shot at a different property.

  • AC in every room
  • 24-hour hot water
  • Pure-veg kitchen
  • Room service
  • Free gated parking
  • Meeting room
  • Laundry
  • CCTV & 24-hr reception

See the actual room before you pay for it. Message us and we'll send photographs of the rooms available for your dates — not a stock gallery, and not the one good room every hotel photographs.

Top Attractions in Gokul & Mathura

Four of these are in Gokul itself. The rest are a short drive across the Yamuna into Mathura.

In Gokul

Chaurasi Khamba (Nand Bhavan)

The eighty-four-pillared hall held to be the home of Nanda Baba, and among the oldest surviving structures in Braj. Pilgrims come for the pillars themselves — each one different, each one older than most of what stands in Mathura today.

In Gokul · a short walk or auto

In Gokul

Brahmand Ghat

The ghat on the Yamuna where Yashoda, checking whether her child had eaten mud, is said to have looked into his mouth and seen the entire cosmos. Devotees still take a pinch of the clay here. Quietest at first light.

In Gokul · on the Yamuna

In Gokul

Gokul Nath Temple

One of the principal havelis of the Vallabhacharya (Pushtimarg) tradition, and the centre of Gokul's own devotional calendar. The aartis here are smaller and far less crowded than anything you will find in Mathura or Vrindavan.

In Gokul

Mahavan

Raman Reti

The soft sand where Krishna and Balram are said to have played, now an ashram and a small deer sanctuary. Families with children tend to stay longer here than they planned to. Barefoot is the point.

Mahavan · minutes away

Mathura

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi

The birthplace itself — the prison cell, the temple complex above it, and the single most-visited site in Braj. Go early. Security is thorough and phones are not allowed inside, so plan for the cloakroom queue.

~9 km · about 20 minutes

Mathura

Dwarkadhish Temple & Vishram Ghat

Mathura's principal temple and the ghat where Krishna is said to have rested after killing Kansa. The evening aarti on the water is the one most visitors remember longest. Both sit within the old city, a few minutes apart.

Frequently asked questions

Everything You Need to Know About Staying in Gokul

How far is the hotel from Krishna Janmabhoomi?

About 9 km, roughly twenty minutes by car. Mathura city slows badly around festivals, which is exactly why being out in Gokul works in your favour rather than against you.

Is this in Vrindavan?

No, and we won't pretend otherwise. Prem Mandir and Banke Bihari are about 19.6 km away, a forty-minute drive. If your trip is Vrindavan-only, a Vrindavan hotel will suit you better. If you're doing the wider Braj circuit — Gokul, Mahavan, Mathura, Baldeo — then Gokul is the better base, and the quieter one.

What is there to see in Gokul itself?

Chaurasi Khamba (Nand Bhavan), Brahmand Ghat, the Gokul Nath temple, and Raman Reti at Mahavan — all within a short walk or auto ride. Gokul also keeps its own festival calendar: Nandotsav here falls the day after Janmashtami, and it is Nanda Baba's village that celebrates it.

Do you have air-conditioning and hot water?

AC and a ceiling fan in every room. A geyser in every bathroom, so hot water at any hour — including five in the morning, when you are leaving for darshan.

Can I see the room before I book?

Yes. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll send photographs of the rooms available for your dates. It is the fastest way to settle it, and it is why we don't ask you to fill in a form.

Is there parking?

Free, on site, inside our own gate. Cars and Tempo Travellers both fit — which matters more than it sounds if you have driven into Mathura city on a festival weekend.

Do you cater to groups and yatra parties?

Yes. From five rooms upward you get one coordinator, one quote and one bill. We also have a meeting room for group briefings and small gatherings. Send your dates and room count on WhatsApp and we'll come back with a group rate.

How do I book?

WhatsApp is quickest — availability and the rate for your dates within a few minutes, and you pay at the hotel. No booking fee, no card details typed into a form.
