About the Destination

Resorts in Alibaug, About This Destination

Alibaug is just 1 hour by ferry from Mumbai's Gateway of India, which makes it one of the easiest beach escapes from a major city anywhere in India. Fifteen beaches, the sea fort at Kolaba, and proper Konkan forest resorts. The best Alibaug hotels sit inside private forests close to the coast — exactly what Silvanus Forest Resort offers. The pace is slow, and that's the point.

Kolaba Fort: Shivaji Maharaj's Maratha Sea Fortress Built in 1680 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Kolaba Fort sits just off Alibaug's shoreline. You can walk to it at low tide or take a boat at high tide. Cannon batteries, bastions, and temples inside speak to Maratha naval power on the Konkan coast.
15 Beaches & the Konkan Coastline Alibaug Beach for water sports and activity, casuarina-lined Kihim for quiet walks, and Kashid for its white sand and clear water. All within easy reach along the Raigad coast.

Top Attractions
in Alibaug

A Maratha sea fort, 15 beaches, water sports, a sacred Konkan temple, and coconut palms as far as you can see. Alibaug has a lot going on for a small town.

Kolaba Fort (Alibaug Fort)

Built in 1680 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on a rocky island just off Alibaug beach. You can walk across the sandbank at low tide or take a local boat when the tide is in. Inside: massive bastions, cannon emplacements, a Siddheshwar Temple, Ganesh Temple, and two freshwater wells. The low-tide walk with the fort ahead and open sea behind is one of the better experiences on the Maharashtra coast.

Alibaug Beach & Water Sports

Alibaug's main beach runs along the town centre, with Kolaba Fort visible just offshore. Good for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports: jet skiing, banana boat, parasailing, and horse riding. The beachside market has fresh coconuts, fried fish, and Konkan street food. Busy on weekends, quieter mid-week.

Heart of Alibaug town

Kihim Beach & Nagaon Beach

Two of Alibaug's most beloved beaches for travellers seeking peace away from the main town crowds. Kihim Beach (~12 km from Alibaug) is a long, serene stretch of dark sand shaded by a dense casuarina forest, one of Maharashtra's best bird-watching locations with over 100 species recorded in the surrounding groves. Nagaon Beach (~20 km from Alibaug) is a clean, wide beach with gentler surf and excellent facilities, popular for family holidays, water sports, and the Nagaon lagoon that forms at the estuary's mouth. Both beaches offer a more meditative experience of the Konkan coast.

12–20 km from Alibaug

Kashid Beach & Revdanda Fort

Kashid Beach (~30 km south of Alibaug) is widely celebrated as one of Maharashtra's most beautiful beaches: a long, sweeping bay of brilliant white sand backed by casuarina trees and the Sahyadri foothills, with the clear blue-green water of the Arabian Sea. The calm waves, clean sand, and relatively uncrowded atmosphere make it a favourite for overnight and weekend trips. Nearby, the 16th-century Revdanda Fort (a Portuguese fortification at the mouth of the Revdanda Creek estuary, ~15 km from Alibaug) offers a fascinating glimpse into the Portuguese maritime empire on the Konkan coast, with its crumbling ramparts, gateways, and bastions scattered along the estuary shore.

15–30 km from Alibaug

Shree Padmakhshi Renuka Temple

A deeply sacred Konkan temple at the heart of Alibaug's spiritual life, dedicated to Shree Padmakhshi Renuka, revered as the Goddess of the Konkan. The temple is one of the oldest and most important religious sites in Raigad district, drawing devotees from across Maharashtra for its powerful energy, the sacred architecture of its Hemadpanthi-influenced construction, and the intense devotional atmosphere of festival days, particularly during Navratri and the goddess's annual rath (chariot procession). The temple exemplifies the deep interweaving of coastal Maharashtra's religious life with its Konkan landscape and cultural heritage.

Alibaug is best known for the Kolaba Fort, built in 1680 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and sitting right off the main beach. Beyond that: 15 beaches including Kashid's white sands, water sports (jet skiing, parasailing, banana boat), Kihim Beach for bird-watching, and the 1-hour ferry from Mumbai's Gateway of India. There's also the Shree Padmakhshi Renuka Temple, an important Konkan pilgrimage site. Fresh seafood, forest resorts, and a slow coastal pace make up the rest.

October to February is the best time to visit Alibaug. The weather is pleasant and cool (20–30°C), the beaches are clean and calm, and water sports conditions are excellent. November to January is peak season with the finest beach and resort experience. March to May is warm (28–38°C) but clear. The monsoon (June to September) brings dramatic rainfall (the Konkan receives 3,000–4,000 mm annually). The forest resort becomes strikingly lush and green, waterfalls cascade across the Sahyadris, but ferry services can be disrupted and beach conditions are rough. Many travellers specifically choose the monsoon for the verdant forest ambience at Silvanus and the cool, rain-swept Konkan landscape. Note: November/December and school holidays book out very fast, so advance reservations are strongly recommended.

The most popular and recommended route is the ferry from Gateway of India to Mandwa Jetty (~1 hour), scenic, fast, and far preferable to the road journey during Mumbai weekend traffic. Ferries typically run from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM; book online in advance especially for weekends and holidays. By road from Mumbai: approximately 95 km (~2.5–3 hrs) via the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and NH-66. By road from Pune: approximately 185 km (~4 hrs) via Khopoli and NH-66. By rail: Pen Railway Station (~30 km from Alibaug, ~45 min by taxi) on the Central Railway is the nearest railhead. Trains from Mumbai CST/Dadar take approximately 1.5–2 hrs. From Mandwa, Silvanus Forest Resort is approximately 15–20 minutes by taxi.
