Kolaba Fort (Alibaug Fort)

Built in 1680 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on a rocky island just off Alibaug beach. You can walk across the sandbank at low tide or take a local boat when the tide is in. Inside: massive bastions, cannon emplacements, a Siddheshwar Temple, Ganesh Temple, and two freshwater wells. The low-tide walk with the fort ahead and open sea behind is one of the better experiences on the Maharashtra coast.

October to February is the best time to visit Alibaug. The weather is pleasant and cool (20–30°C), the beaches are clean and calm, and water sports conditions are excellent. The monsoon (June to September) brings dramatic rainfall (the Konkan receives 3,000–4,000 mm annually). The forest resort becomes strikingly lush and green, waterfalls cascade across the Sahyadris, but ferry services can be disrupted and beach conditions are rough. Many travellers specifically choose the monsoon for the verdant forest ambience at Silvanus and the cool, rain-swept Konkan landscape.
