About Jaipur

Jaipur was built in 1727 as India's first planned city and still shows it. The walled old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Amber Fort's mirror halls, the 953-windowed Hawa Mahal, and City Palace all within easy reach. The streets are genuinely impressive. The bazaars are genuinely chaotic. Worth every bit of the journey.

Forts, Palaces & Royal Architecture Amber Fort's mirror halls, the Diwan-i-Khas at City Palace, and the Hawa Mahal's 953-window facade are all inside Jaipur's UNESCO-listed walled city. You can cover the main sites in two good days.
Bazaars & the Gemstone Trade Johari Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar, and Tripolia Bazaar are packed with precious stones, Kundan jewellery, blue pottery, and block-printed fabrics. Jaipur is a major global centre for emerald and ruby polishing. Budget extra time here.
Between Delhi, Agra & Rajasthan Jaipur sits in the middle of the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur Golden Triangle. Delhi is 280 km away, Agra about 240 km. From here you can also head deeper into Rajasthan, towards Jodhpur, Udaipur, or the Thar desert.

What to See
in & around Jaipur

Forts, palaces, astronomical instruments, lakes, and markets. Jaipur has enough to fill four or five days without doubling back.

Amber Fort (Amer Fort)

The Kachawaha Rajput fortress that sits above Maota Lake, 11 km out of the city. The Sheesh Mahal is the main draw: a ceiling of thousands of tiny mirrors that turn a single candle into a room full of stars. The Ganesh Pol gate and the long ramp up to the main entrance are both worth the climb. Go early to beat the crowds.

11 km from Jaipur

Hawa Mahal

Built in 1799, the Hawa Mahal's five-storey facade has 953 small latticed windows, originally built so royal women could watch street life without being seen. It is the most photographed building in Jaipur. The pink sandstone looks best at sunrise. You can walk inside, though most people photograph it from the street opposite.

Old City, Jaipur

City Palace & Museum

Still partly home to the Jaipur royal family. The complex includes the Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, and the Diwan-i-Khas, where two giant silver urns sit on display. Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II had them made to carry Ganges water on a trip to England in 1901 and they are recorded as the world's largest silver objects. The museum section has strong textile, armour, and painting collections.

Old City, Jaipur

Jantar Mantar

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest masonry astronomical observatory in the world, built between 1724 and 1735. Its 19 instruments include the Samrat Yantra, a stone sundial accurate to within two seconds. It was built not as decoration but as a working tool for predicting eclipses and tracking celestial movement. It still works. Right next to City Palace, so easy to combine in one visit.

Near City Palace, Jaipur

Jal Mahal

A five-storey palace that sits in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, with four of those storeys underwater. You cannot go inside, but the view from the lakeside promenade is good, especially at dusk when the palace is lit up against the Nahargarh hills. Flamingos and migratory birds gather around the lake. A quick stop on the way to Amber Fort.

8 km from Jaipur on Amber Road

Nahargarh Fort

Up in the Aravalli Hills at 700 m, Nahargarh has the best view of Jaipur. The whole city spreads out below, and the panorama after dark is worth the drive up. Built in 1734, the fort's Madhavendra Bhawan has twelve identical suites, each built for a different queen. The restaurants at the top are popular for sunset, so go a bit early to get a seat.

Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and is known as the Pink City. Its main draws are the Rajput forts and palaces: Amber Fort, Nahargarh Fort, Jaigarh Fort, the Hawa Mahal, City Palace, and the Jantar Mantar observatory, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The walled old city itself has been a UNESCO site since 2019. The bazaars sell gemstones, Kundan jewellery, blue pottery, and block-printed fabric. The Jaipur Literature Festival runs every January and is one of the biggest in the world.

October to March. Temperatures run 10 to 25°C, which makes walking around forts and markets manageable. January brings the Jaipur Literature Festival and the kite festival on Makar Sankranti. November works well if you want to combine Jaipur with the Pushkar Camel Fair, which is 90 km away. Avoid April through June, when it regularly hits 45°C. The monsoon (July to September) is humid and hot but the hillsides go green and crowds are thinner.

Jaipur is 280 km from Delhi, about 4.5 hours by road on NH-48 or by the Shatabdi Express. Agra is about 240 km away, roughly 4 hours by road via NH-21. The three cities together form the Golden Triangle, India's most visited tourist loop. A 5 to 7 day itinerary covers all three comfortably.

By air: JAI airport is 11 km from the city, with direct flights from Delhi (45 min), Mumbai (1.5 hrs), Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and international routes. By train: Jaipur Junction has good links to Delhi, Mumbai, and Agra. The Shatabdi from Delhi is 4.5 hours. By road: NH-48 covers 280 km from Delhi in around 4.5 hours; RSRTC Volvo buses run from Delhi daily. Call +91 8010 527783 to arrange a transfer from the airport or station.
