About Goa

Beaches: Busy or Quiet, You Can Choose Calangute, Baga, and Anjuna in North Goa are busy and social. Morjim is calmer and known for Olive Ridley turtle nesting. Further south, Palolem and Agonda are India's most unspoiled crescent beaches. All within a manageable drive of each other.
Goan Food: Nothing Else Quite Like It in India The Portuguese-Konkani-Indian mix produced a cuisine that stands alone. Pork vindaloo, fish xacuti, prawn balchao, Goan chorizo, and bebinca (a layered coconut cake) are the things to try. Wash it down with feni, the local cashew liquor with its own GI tag.

Beach days, Portuguese forts, UNESCO churches, a waterfall worth the drive, and the Anjuna Flea Market on Wednesdays. Goa is a small state with a lot packed into it.

Calangute & Baga Beach

The busiest and most well-known beaches in North Goa, running into each other along a stretch of golden sand. Beach shacks, water sports (jet-skiing, parasailing, banana boats), and plenty of activity. Baga Creek separates the two. If you want the full Goa beach experience, this is the starting point.

Basilica of Bom Jesus

Built between 1594 and 1605, this UNESCO-listed church in Old Goa holds the remains of St. Francis Xavier in an ornate silver casket. The Baroque facade and gilded altar are some of the finest Portuguese church architecture in Asia. The remains are displayed publicly on a 10-year cycle, drawing enormous crowds.

Fort Aguada

Built in 1612 where the Mandovi River meets the Arabian Sea, Fort Aguada is the largest surviving Portuguese fort in Goa. The walls were built to hold off Dutch and Maratha attacks. The four-storey lighthouse inside dates to 1864 and gives good views of the coastline. A natural freshwater spring inside the fort, which is what gave it the name aguada (meaning water), was used to resupply ships on the route between Lisbon and Goa.

Dudhsagar Falls

On the Goa-Karnataka border, Dudhsagar drops 310 metres in four tiers through thick Western Ghats forest. One of India's tallest waterfalls. The name means Sea of Milk, which gives you a sense of what it looks like at full flow from June to January. You get there by jeep safari through the jungle after the railway crossing, which is half the fun.

Old Goa & the Se Cathedral

Old Goa was once the largest city in Asia east of Lisbon. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Se Cathedral (1619) is the largest church in Asia, dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. The Church of St. Cajetan was modelled on St. Peter's in Rome. Together with the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, it forms a concentration of Portuguese Baroque architecture found nowhere else in India.

Anjuna Flea Market

Every Wednesday at Anjuna Beach. Started as part of the hippie-trail culture in the 1960s and 70s, it has grown into a proper market with hundreds of stalls selling Kashmiri crafts, Rajasthani textiles, Tibetan jewellery, beachwear, spices, and Goan souvenirs. Arrive early for the best pick. The seafood shacks around it make for a good lunch after.

Getting to Goa

Goa has two airports, good rail links on the Konkan Railway, and highway access from Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru. The new Mopa airport in North Goa cuts travel time considerably for Candolim, Calangute, and Morjim.

It depends on what you are after. Candolim (De Mandarin) is quieter and more relaxed, near Fort Aguada and the Taj. A good choice if you want a beach-village pace without being too far from anything. Calangute (Hotel Mulberry Mint) puts you right in the middle of the action: beach shacks, water sports, day trips to Anjuna Market and Old Goa, all within easy reach. Morjim (Turtle Beach Resort) is the least busy option. A green, roomy property 850 metres from the beach. Better for couples, families, or anyone who wants to properly switch off.

Goa is India's smallest state and sits on the Konkan Coast. Its 65 km of beaches range from the busy, social Calangute and Baga strips to the much quieter Morjim and Palolem further south. Old Goa has a UNESCO-listed cluster of Baroque churches, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus (which holds the remains of St. Francis Xavier) and the Se Cathedral, the largest church in Asia. The food is a big part of the appeal: vindaloo, fish xacuti, bebinca, Goan chorizo, and feni are all local to the state. Other draws include Dudhsagar Falls, the Anjuna Flea Market, spice plantation tours in Ponda, a floating casino on the Mandovi River, and the Carnival in February or March.

November to February is the best time to visit. The weather is cool (20 to 32°C), the sea is calm, and everything is open. December and January are peak season, with Christmas, New Year, and the Sunburn Festival all drawing large crowds. October and March are quieter shoulder months with good weather. April and May get hot (35 to 38°C), but hotel rates drop significantly. June to September is monsoon. The beach shacks close, but Dudhsagar Falls is spectacular, the landscape goes very green, and off-season rates are the lowest of the year. The Carnival is in February or March.

From Dabolim (GOI): De Mandarin in Candolim is about 40 km away (50 to 60 minutes), Hotel Mulberry Mint in Calangute is about 42 km (55 minutes), and Turtle Beach Resort in Morjim is about 55 km (70 to 80 minutes). From the newer Manohar Airport (GOX/Mopa): Morjim is about 20 km (25 minutes) and Calangute is about 30 km (40 minutes). All three properties can arrange airport transfers.
