About the Destination

About Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, renamed from Aurangabad in 2023, is the closest city to both Ajanta and Ellora. Most visits to the caves start here. The city also has its own monuments worth seeing: Bibi Ka Maqbara, Daulatabad Fort, and the local Aurangabad Caves. Maharashtra's Paithani silk-weaving tradition is rooted here too.

Ajanta & Ellora: Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites Ajanta's 30 rock-cut caves (1st c. BCE to 5th c. CE) contain the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian fresco painting. Ellora's 34 caves span three faiths. Its Kailasa Temple, carved from a single basalt cliff, is the largest rock-cut monument on earth.
Bibi Ka Maqbara: The Taj of the Deccan Built in 1679 by Azam Shah in memory of his mother, this Mughal mausoleum mirrors the Taj Mahal in design. Four minarets, a formal garden, reflecting pools. One of the most visited monuments in Maharashtra.
Himroo & Paithani: Local Textile Traditions Himroo (silk-cotton, Mughal geometric patterns) and Paithani (handloom silk with gold zari borders) are both made in the city. You can visit working workshops and watch the handloom process up close.

What to See

Top Attractions
in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar

Two UNESCO sites, a Mughal mausoleum, a 12th-century hilltop fort, cave monasteries inside the city limits, and working handloom workshops. There's a lot here for two or three days.

Ajanta Caves

UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thirty rock-cut Buddhist caves carved into a horseshoe-shaped cliff above the Waghura River. The murals here, painted between the 1st century BCE and the 5th century CE, are the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian fresco painting. They were sealed and forgotten for over a thousand years before being found by a British officer in 1819. Plan a full day. A guide helps make sense of the detail.

~100 km from CSN

Ellora Caves

UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thirty-four rock-cut caves representing Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions, all carved between 600 and 1000 CE. The centrepiece is the Kailasa Temple (Cave 16), hewn from a single basalt cliff in the 8th century. It covers twice the area of the Parthenon and goes 30 metres deep. More rock was excavated to build it than the entire Great Pyramid of Giza. Allocate at least half a day.

~30 km from CSN

Bibi Ka Maqbara

Built in 1679 by Mughal prince Azam Shah in memory of his mother. Four minarets, a central dome, a formal garden with reflecting pools. The design deliberately echoes the Taj Mahal, which is why it's known as the Taj of the Deccan. It's inside the city, so easy to fit in on arrival or departure day. Looks particularly good in the early morning light.

Within CSN city

Daulatabad Fort

Rising 200 metres on a sheer basalt hill, Daulatabad was originally built as Deogiri by the Yadava dynasty in 1187. Multiple rulers held it over the centuries, each adding to its defences. The concentric moats, tunnels, concealed staircases, and fire chambers make it one of the most thoughtfully defended fortresses in India. The climb takes about 45 minutes and the views from the top are worth it.

~15 km from CSN

Aurangabad Caves

Two groups of Buddhist rock-cut monasteries within the city, carved from the 3rd to the 11th centuries. Less crowded than Ajanta or Ellora, and worth the short detour. Cave 7 in the eastern group has a well-preserved Bodhisattva panel with eight attendants that had a clear influence on Buddhist art across the region. Good for an hour or two on a day when you want something quieter.

Within CSN city

Panchakki & Himroo Weaving

Panchakki is a 17th-century Sufi dargah complex with a water wheel fed by an underground channel, built to grind grain for pilgrims. Interesting piece of medieval engineering, and a calm place to visit. In the old city nearby, Himroo weaving workshops are still active. The fabric, a silk-cotton blend with Mughal geometric patterns, has been made here for around 700 years. Worth picking up a piece if you're passing through.

About Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar

Stone Leaf is a 30-room boutique hotel in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (formerly Aurangabad). It has a rooftop restaurant with city views, a banquet hall, and comfortable rooms for business and leisure stays. Good location for visiting the Ajanta and Ellora caves. Call +91 8010 527783 to check availability or ask about your stay.

Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ajanta (about 100 km from CSN) has 30 rock-cut Buddhist caves with ancient murals painted between the 1st century BCE and 5th century CE. They're the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian fresco art. Ellora (about 30 km from CSN) has 34 caves representing Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions. Its Kailasa Temple in Cave 16, carved from a single basalt cliff in the 8th century, is the largest single-rock structure in the world.

Most people come for Ajanta and Ellora, but there's more to see: Bibi Ka Maqbara (the Taj of the Deccan), Daulatabad Fort, and the Aurangabad Caves are all within easy reach. The city also has active Himroo and Paithani weaving workshops. It was renamed in 2023 from Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, honouring the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

October to March is the best time. The weather is cool and dry, around 15 to 30 degrees, which is ideal for walking the cave sites and fort. November to February is the most comfortable. April to June gets very hot (up to 44 degrees) and is better avoided for outdoor sightseeing. July to September is monsoon, which brings lush greenery and spectacular waterfalls near Ajanta, though the approach road can flood. The Ellora Ajanta Aurangabad Festival, usually held in March, is worth timing a visit around.

Two full days is the minimum if you want to cover both properly. Day one: Ellora Caves (3 to 4 hours, with at least an hour just for the Kailasa Temple), then Daulatabad Fort and Bibi Ka Maqbara on the way back. Day two: Ajanta Caves, which needs a full day. Three days is more comfortable and lets you include the city caves and Panchakki. Stone Leaf is well placed for both routes, since Ellora is west and Ajanta is to the north-east.

From Mumbai: fly in around 55 minutes, or take the Devgiri Express which takes about 6 hours. By road it's around 380 km via Nashik, about 6 hours. From Pune: about 40 minutes by air, or around 4 hours by road on NH-65 via Ahmednagar, or 5 hours by train. From Hyderabad: about 1 hour by air or 7 hours by road on NH-65. The airport (IXU) is inside the city, so getting to the hotel is quick.
