About Indore
Indore is Madhya Pradesh's commercial capital and has been India's cleanest city for six years straight. It is a functional, well-run city that also happens to have the Rajwada Palace, the Sarafa Bazaar night market, and street food that many people insist is the best in India. Not a bad combination.
India's Cleanest City, Six Years RunningIndore has won the Swachh Survekshan award every year from 2017 to 2023. It shows. The public spaces are clean, the roads are maintained, and the city runs well. A genuine civic achievement that visitors notice within the first hour.
India's Street Food CapitalFrom the Sarafa Bazaar night market and Chappan Dukaan to the morning poha-jalebi routine, Indore's street food reputation is well earned. People travel to the city specifically to eat. Budget at least one evening for Sarafa.
Holkar Palaces & Classical MusicThe seven-storey Rajwada Palace and the Italian-style Lal Bagh Palace are the two main Holkar-era landmarks. Indore is also the birthplace of the Indore Gharana, one of Hindustani classical music's major schools, and the legendary vocalist Ustad Amir Khan.

What to See in & around Indore
Palaces, a night food market, a glass Jain temple, monsoon waterfalls, and the old hill fortress of Mandu an hour's drive away. Enough to fill three or four days easily.
Rajwada Palace
The seven-storey Holkar dynasty palace at the centre of Indore's old city. Built over 200 years ago with Mughal, Maratha, and French architectural elements, it has been rebuilt after several fires. The facade overlooks a wide plaza with a fountain and is the most recognised landmark in the city. Start here to get a sense of old Indore.
Old City, Indore
Lal Bagh Palace
Built between 1886 and 1921 in an Italian Renaissance style, Lal Bagh is one of the better-preserved colonial-era palaces in central India. The entrance gates are modelled on Buckingham Palace's gates in London. Inside, the durbar hall, marble staircase, chandeliers, and European furniture reflect the Holkar rulers' taste at the height of their influence. About 3 km from Hotel Winway.

Sarafa Bazaar Night Food Market
A jewellery market by day that becomes a food street after dark. From around 9pm to 2am, stalls serve bhutte ka kees, garadu, dahi puri, shikanji, malpua, and jalebi. If you only do one thing in Indore, do this. It is genuinely one of the best street food experiences in India.
Old City, Indore
Kanch Mandir (Glass Temple)
A Jain temple with walls, ceilings, pillars, and floors entirely covered in mirrors and coloured glass. Built in the early 20th century by Seth Hukumchand, it is one of India's most unusual places of worship. Nothing quite prepares you for how completely the interior is covered. Short visit, but one that sticks with you.
Old City, Indore
Patalpani Waterfall
About 35 km from Indore on the Mhow road, Patalpani drops 300 feet into a rocky gorge. During the monsoon (July to September) it is at full volume and the surrounding Vindhya forest goes green. The narrow-gauge Mhow-Khandwa railway runs past a viaduct nearby, which makes the drive out worth combining with a heritage train ride if you time it right.
35 km from Indore
Mandu, City of Joy
About 100 km from Indore, Mandu is an old hill fortress city spread across a plateau above the Narmada Valley. Palaces, mosques, and pavilions, many still intact. It is quieter than most heritage sites of this scale. The story of Sultan Baz Bahadur and singer Rani Roopmati runs through the whole place. A good day trip or overnight if you want to slow down.
