A 400-year-old fort. A floating Buddha. India's largest single-collector museum. The world's biggest film studio. Hyderabad covers a lot of ground and most of it is worth your time.
Built in 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah to mark the founding of Hyderabad, the Charminar is 56 metres tall and still the city's clearest landmark. The Indo-Islamic structure has arched galleries, prayer spaces, and terraces. Laad Bazaar, right outside, is the country's best market for bangles and pearls. The famous haleem sellers operate nearby throughout the day.
~20 km from GachibowliGolconda, from the Telugu for Shepherd's Hill, rises 120 metres above the Deccan plateau about 11 km from the city. The Koh-i-Noor, Hope Diamond, and Regent Diamond all came from Golconda's mines. The fort's acoustic system is still working: a handclap at the entrance carries clearly to the top. Plan for at least two hours. The sound and light show in the evening is popular and worth checking.
~22 km from GachibowliHussain Sagar was built in 1563 and sits between Hyderabad and Secunderabad. At the centre of the lake, on a rock island, stands an 18-metre monolithic Buddha weighing 320 tonnes, one of the world's largest of its kind. Evening boat rides give you a good view of both the statue and the city skyline as the lights come on. A relaxed way to spend an hour or two.
~14 km from GachibowliSalar Jung III, Prime Minister to the last Nizam, assembled over 43,000 artefacts across his lifetime. European paintings, Japanese jade, Indian miniatures, Aurangzeb's armour, Tipu Sultan's belongings, and an entire gallery of mechanical clocks. No single-person collection in India comes close to its range. Allow at least three hours. The mechanical clock gallery alone is worth the admission.
~20 km from GachibowliSeven mausoleums built for the Qutb Shahi rulers of Golconda between the 16th and 17th centuries. The site blends Persian, Pathan, and Hindu architectural traditions and has been carefully restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Go at dusk. The granite and lime plaster domes catch the light well and the crowds thin out in the late afternoon. Less visited than Golconda but equally good.
~20 km from GachibowliRamoji Film City covers 1,666 acres on the outskirts of Hyderabad and is the world's largest integrated film studio complex, certified by UNESCO. Bollywood, Tollywood, and international productions have all filmed here. The site has over 50 permanent sets representing locations around the world, guided studio tours, entertainment shows, and wildlife areas. Worth a full day if you are travelling with family or interested in the film industry.
